A Helpful Guide to Types of Door Locks and Their Uses

When you’re building a home or updating your front door, you probably consider the color and style of the door and how the handle or knob will look. Do you consider the lock and type of security features it offers? You should! We’ll dive into the types of door locks you can choose for your home.

What Are the 5 Different Types of Door Locks?

There’s a wide variety of types of door locks on the market for you to choose from. Read on to learn more!

1. Deadbolt Locks

Deadbolts have lock bolts that move in and out when you turn a knob or key. This is a high-quality locking mechanism that can resist physical damage and break-ins with a knife or other tool.

There are three types of deadbolts: single, double, and vertical. Single deadbolts are activated from one side by using a key, double deadbolts are used from both sides with a key, and vertical deadbolts operate in the same way as single or double deadbolts, except the lock will move up and down instead of horizontally. The vertical option is the most resistant to physical force from a crowbar and other tools.

2. Padlocks

Padlocks are freestanding and aren’t permanently attached to a door. They’re easily recognizable from their looped shackle shape and are most commonly used to lock up gates, storage container doors, lockers, safes, and cabinet doors.

Padlocks come in different sizes and models and are grouped into two categories: keyed and combination. As you can probably guess, keyed padlocks are operated by using a key, and combination padlocks require a combination code to open and close the lock.

3. Knob Locks

Knob locks are probably what you’re most familiar with. They consist of a doorknob with a lock cylinder located inside. These types of locks are most commonly used for interior doors, but aren’t recommended for exterior doors. They can easily be broken into with a hammer or wrench, and sometimes even something as simple as a hairpin or credit card.

The most common applications for cam locks include file cabinets, display cases, vending machines, and desks. They can either be operated via a key or a combination.

4. Keypad Locks

One of the more modern locks on today’s market is the keypad lock. Rather than using a key, they’re operated by a keypad, either battery-powered or mechanically. Keypad locks can be used in conjunction with deadbolt locks, knob locks, or mortise locks.

Keypad locks are favored by homeowners because they offer a high level of security. Plus, with the use of a code, you’ll never have to worry about not having your key with you.

5. Smart Locks

Smart locks are the latest and greatest option on the market. Many of these locks come with a keypad and keyhole, but they also have the benefit of being locked or unlocked with the use of a fob or smartphone. Smart locks require power and might need to have batteries replaced routinely.

With the use of smart locks in your home, you can enjoy peace of mind and know that if you leave home without remembering to lock the door, you can do it from anywhere!

How To Choose the Right Lock for Your Home

Now that you know the types of locks on the market, it’s time to decide which one is right for you. That will depend on what features are most important to your application.

Functionality

The primary functions of locks include privacy, security, and usage. What will be the main function of this lock? Do you want it to be easily accessible for others to use, or just you? Will it be protecting the entrance to your home or just a guest bedroom?

Endurance

The endurance required of your lock will depend on where it will be located and how often it’ll be used. For example, safes, lock boxes, and front entry doors require more durable locks compared to one on a bedroom or garage entry door.

Aesthetics

The appearance of a lock is totally your call. Door style may or may not be an important element to you. When you’re shopping, you’ll find a wide range of shapes, sizes, and metals to choose from.

Price

When you’re choosing a new lock, we know it can be tempting to go with the most affordable option. This is one element of your home where we strongly encourage you to put the price as one of your last deciding factors. If you buy a cheap lock, it can be poorly made and put the safety of your home at risk. Plus, replacing it will cost you more in the long run.
