When Should I Replace My Windows?

If you have lived in a house for a number of years or are in the process of renovating, you’ve likely wondered at least once whether it’s time to replace your windows. It’s a big decision, so you want to be sure, right?

Several factors can affect the lifespan of windows in your home, including climate and age, but how exactly do you determine when it’s time to go out with the old windows, and in the with new? These three tell-tale signs will show you when it’s time for a full-home window replacement.

Replace Your Windows If:

They’re Showing Serious Wear & Tear

While it’s expected to have to perform some maintenance on your windows, like switching out screens, replacing weatherstripping, or fixing a broken window pane here and there, if your windows consistently seem to have broken parts, have soft or water damaged frames, or they are difficult to open and close (and stay that way), then they’re definitely trying to tell you something — namely that they’re old and tired and ready to be replaced!

Outside of an occasional stray baseball and some minor updates, repairs shouldn’t be constant, and if they are, that’s a key sign it’s window replacement time.

Replace Your Windows if:

Your Energy Bills Continue to Grow

When you walk by your windows, do you notice condensation or feel a breeze? Windows that accumulate moisture and are drafty are also costly! They let heat or cool air out and outside temperatures in, making your furnace and air conditioner work overtime and your energy bills skyrocket.

One big reason for this is that older windows just don’t have the same technology as newer models. Very old, historic windows tend to be single-pane which means they lack insulation, and later models of dual pane windows weren’t built with the same technology we have available today to protect your home’s climate control.

If the only thing more uncomfortable than the inside temp of your home is looking at your energy bill, you might want to consider investing in newer, more energy efficient windows. More than saving you on those monthly utilities, new windows also go a long way to add value to your home.

Replace Your Windows if:

They’re Taking Away From Your Home’s Aesthetic

If your windows have seen better days and are looking old and shabby, that takes away from the appearance of the rest of your house, no matter how many renovations and updates you’ve made. Look at your house from the curb as well as from inside. Do your windows add to your decor and curb appeal or are they distracting from it?

Because windows are such a prominent feature of your home, if they look outdated or out of place, so will your whole house! If this is the case, it’s time to add investing in modern, new windows to your to-do list.
