Choose Your Decking Materials

We are proud to offer a variety of decking options from top decking brands. From treated lumber to hardwoods and softwoods to the increasingly popular composite decking, we have the perfect materials that fit your preferences in strength, style, and ease of installation.

Composite Decking Materials

Composite decking binds wood fibers and recycled plastic into an extremely durable, weather and stain resistant lumber product that won’t warp, split, or splinter. Plastic lumber is also a valuable alternative to wood deck materials. It’s similar to composite except that it contains no wood fibers. Both composite and plastic decking materials come in a variety of colors and styles and are made to look like real wood. Composite decking is part of a growing market of wood alternatives because it is very easy to maintain, and requires no refinishing, sanding, or staining.

Wood Decking Materials

For wood decks, both softwood and hardwood lumber make great decking materials. Wood lumber is categorized in grades by its quality and appearance. For more on this, read our guide to lumber grades.

  • Softwoods: Redwood and cedar decking boards are beautiful and naturally resistant to rot and pests due to oils and tannins already present in the wood. Heartwood, or wood from the centermost part of the tree, is the strongest kind of softwood and offers the most natural protection.
  • Hardwoods: Exotic hardwoods like mahogany, ipe, tigerwood, or massaranduba make beautiful decking materials but require a little more work than softwood to cut and fasten. We recommend pairing hardwood with hidden deck clips for easier installation. You can either leave the wood in its natural state or apply a stain. Hardwoods require an oil-based stain developed for this purpose, as other stains won’t penetrate the dense material.

Treated Lumber Decking Materials

Pressure-treated lumber is resilient, economic, and easy to work with. It can be easily painted or stained to match any shade under the sun. This lumber makes a great decking material because it’s treated to withstand mold, fungus, and pests. In recent years, lumber treatment technology has advanced to use safer, less toxic substances like alkaline copper quaternary or copper azole. You should always use proper protection when handling treated lumber and dispose of any waste in an environmentally appropriate way.
